Two jobs, one product line
On a highway crossing the barrier has to contain a vehicle. On a coastal crossing with a pedestrian and cycle lane it also has to look right, resist salt air for twenty years, and be mountable on a concrete edge beam that was cast before anyone finalised the railing detail.
We fabricate both, and we would rather discuss the base detail early: the post spacing and anchor pattern decide whether the railing can be installed without breaking the kerb.
Types we fabricate
| Type | Typical use | Section / standard |
|---|---|---|
| Three-tube bridge railing | Highway bridges, coastal crossings, footpaths | Ø89 / Ø114 / Ø133 tube, posts at 2.0–2.4 m |
| W-beam crash barrier | Roadside and bridge approach protection | W-beam to AASHTO M180 / ASTM A653 / GB/T 31439 |
| Pedestrian handrail | Footbridges, cycle lanes, station platforms | Ø48.3 / Ø60.3 tube with infill |
| Stainless / duplex railing | Marine frontage, architectural bridges | SS304, SS316L or 2205 duplex |
| Anti-throw screen | Overpasses, viaducts over roads | Welded mesh panel in steel frame |
Containment and finish
- Railing and barrier designed to the containment class required by the scheme — EN 1317 classes or the local highway authority standard
- Hot-dip galvanising at 85 µm minimum for coastal sites (ASTM A123 / A153), with a duplex paint system where colour is specified
- Posts in Q235B or Q355B; stainless options in 304, 316L and 2205 duplex
- Bolts, base plates and anchor templates supplied as a set, so the site is not hunting for M20 galvanised bolts
For US projects, W-beam is supplied to AASHTO M180 with beam steel to ASTM A653; railing tube can be supplied to ASTM A500 on request.
Mounting details
Three options, and the choice is usually made by what is already cast:
- Base plate with cast-in anchors — the usual arrangement on a new edge beam
- Chemical anchors into hardened concrete — for retrofit work where the kerb already exists
- Embedded socket — cleaner appearance, but needs coordination before the concrete pour
Questions we get
Can you match an existing railing on the same road?
Yes, if you can send a photo and a section measurement. Matching an existing profile is common on extension and rehabilitation work.
Do you supply test reports for the barrier?
We fabricate to the specified class and can supply material and coating records. Full-scale crash testing is carried out by accredited test houses and is normally a scheme-level requirement rather than a per-order one — tell us at enquiry stage if a test report is a contractual deliverable.
What about the pedestrian and cycle lane?
On mixed crossings we supply a taller inner handrail with a separate outer barrier, so the two loads are not carried by one post line.
Send a photo of the edge beam and the rail you want.
We return a post layout, an anchor pattern and a price per metre.
